Until Dark is a poignant and touching story about Carla, an elderly woman determined to fulfill her dying wish—to spend one final day honoring her deceased lover. As Carla seeks someone to help her accomplish this, she finds that everyone in her life has written her off due to her age, leaving her feeling isolated and forgotten. Her mission to recreate a special moment in the park becomes not only a reflection of her enduring love but also a powerful commentary on the human need for companionship and purpose, even in our later years.

Reading through Until Dark felt both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Carla’s desire for connection, her struggle to be seen and valued, is something many can relate to, especially those who have lost loved ones or feel a void in their relationships. The scene in the park where Carla attempts to recreate a moment of love with her deceased partner is incredibly intimate and innocent. It showcases the depth of her longing, not just for her lover, but for the sense of belonging she no longer feels in a world that seems to have moved on without her.

The screenplay does an excellent job of weaving Carla’s emotional journey into a fast-paced, yet gentle narrative. Despite its simplicity, the story is profoundly impactful. It speaks to the universal desire for love and companionship, and the sadness that comes with feeling left behind. Ben, the character who eventually joins Carla on her journey, represents the beginning of life’s path, while Carla nears the end. Their connection—however brief—offers a beautiful contrast between youth and aging, life and death, showing that even in our final moments, there is an opportunity for understanding and human connection.

From a technical standpoint, the screenplay’s structure flows well, and the dialogue is natural, allowing the emotional weight of the story to shine. The pacing is spot-on, making the 12-page script feel neither rushed nor dragged out. Each scene serves its purpose, and the interactions between Carla and the people she calls for help reflect a deeper societal issue of how the elderly are often disregarded once they’ve “served their purpose.”

Until Dark is a touching, emotional journey that will resonate with anyone who values close relationships or mourns the loss of them. It’s a story that highlights the power of love and the loneliness of aging, and it will leave a lasting impression on audiences during a table read or any future production.
